Course Overview

Studying this course is like stepping into the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome! It’s split into two fascinating parts, giving you the chance to explore both cultures in depth. On the Greek side, you’ll investigate the dynamic relations between Greek and non-Greek states from 492–404 BC. From the powerful city state of Sparta to the cultural brilliance of Athens, or the meteoric rise of Macedon under Philip and Alexander, you’ll choose a depth topic that truly captures your imagination. Each topic dives into the complexities of leadership, society, and international relations that shaped Greek history during this pivotal era.

Switching over to Roman history, the focus shifts to the captivating Julio-Claudian emperors, charting Augustus’s foundational reforms and Nero’s dramatic reign. Alongside this, you can specialise in areas such as the Breakdown of the Late Republic, how the Flavian dynasty transformed the empire, or life under Roman rule in Britain between AD 43 and AD 128. Each specialism offers a window into the political, social, and military developments that defined the Roman world.

As you progress, you’ll sharpen your ability to critically evaluate ancient sources, using artefacts and texts to unravel the ambitions, challenges, and achievements of these ancient societies. Modern interpretations also come into play, encouraging you to weigh historical debates and consider diverse viewpoints. It’s all designed to nurture your analytical prowess and deepen your understanding of the past’s enduring legacy. Whether you’re passionate about unravelling history’s mysteries or eager to build lifelong skills, this course will empower you to explore, question, and connect with the ancient world like never before!
