Your Step-by-Step Guide to applying to University

Applying to university is a massive milestone, and the UCAS application process may seem overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be! With the right guidance and support, it’s achievable and even exciting! We’re here to walk you through every step so you can submit an application you’re proud of, and one that helps get you to where you need to go.

At Nelson & Colne College, we’re committed to ensuring you have all the tools and resources needed to succeed through this process and beyond. Here’s your ultimate step-by-step guide to UCAS, complete with tips and insights to make your application stand out.

What Is UCAS, and Why Is It Important?

UCAS is the centralised system for applying to universities in the UK. Whether you’re dreaming of studying engineering, medicine, or creative arts, UCAS makes it easy to apply to multiple universities in one place. You can choose up to five courses and rank them in no particular order.

Your application will consist of several core parts, including your personal details, educational history, teacher references, and a personal statement. The personal statement is your chance to shine, and we’ll talk more about that below.

Step-by-Step Guide to Your Application

1

Register on UCAS Hub

Start by creating a UCAS account through the UCAS Hub (www.ucas.com). Fill in all your personal details accurately. Be sure to set up a reminder for deadlines within your Hub dashboard.

2

Research Universities and Courses

Take your time exploring universities and courses on the UCAS website. Look for courses that align with your career ambitions and personal interests. Don’t forget to consider entry requirements, career opportunities, and course structures.

College Support Tip

Discuss your course choices with your tutors who can guide you based on your strengths and goals!

3

Draft Your Personal Statement

Your personal statement is where you get to impress admissions tutors with your passion, achievements, and long-term aspirations. This is your unique story, so make it count!

College Support Tip

Join one of the personal statement workshops hosted by Nelson & Colne College to ensure your statement is impactful and polished. You’ll learn how to structure your message, showcase your achievements, and highlight what makes you the perfect candidate.

4

Complete Your UCAS Sections

Your UCAS application includes sections for personal information, education, and employment. Double-check that all your grades and certifications are correct. Those small details matter!

5

Request a Tutor Reference

Your tutor reference is an important part of the application. This will highlight your skills, work ethic, and suitability for the courses you’re applying to.

College Support Tip

Ask your tutor early to give them plenty of time to craft a glowing reference! They can also work with you to ensure it supports your personal statement.

6

Submit and Pay

Once your application is complete, you’ll pay your UCAS fee and submit it for consideration. You’re officially on your way!

What Happens Next?

After you’ve submitted your application, here’s what to expect next:
  • Application Acknowledgement: Universities will confirm they’ve received your application.
