Course Overview

Are you intrigued about what makes people commit crime – from fraud to violent attacks – or how it is investigated and dealt with in the justice system? BTEC Level 3 Criminology gives you an eye-opening insight into the world of crime, its causes, and the systems designed to tackle it. On this course, you’ll explore a wide range of criminal behaviour, from cybercrime and theft to violent and white-collar offences, and discover how these actions affect individuals, communities, and society. You’ll dig into why people break the law, looking at social, psychological, and economic factors, and explore how society responds to these challenges.

How is the course delivered?

Level 3 Criminology is hands on and focused, combining lessons, tutorials, and supervised assessments. You’ll explore vocational case studies and task based learning, gaining practical and academic skills in real world contexts to prepare you for future success.

How my learning will be assessed?

Level 3 Criminology is split equally between internal controlled assessments and external exams. Internal assessments cover Unit 1 (“Changing Awareness of Crime”) and Unit 3 (“Crime Scene to Courtroom”), involving supervised, task based assignments tailored to real world scenarios. External exams, each 1 hour 30 minutes (75 marks), assess Unit 2 (“Criminological Theories”) and Unit 4 (“Crime and Punishment”) through short and extended answers based on case studies. To achieve the qualification, you must pass all four units, ensuring a balance of practical skills and theoretical knowledge for a strong foundation in criminology.
