Course Overview

The Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship provides the skills, knowledge, and behaviours to build a successful career in engineering and advanced manufacturing. Fitters play a vital role in producing complex, high-value, low-volume components or assemblies, either in full or in part, to precise specifications. These may include turbines, cranes, gearboxes, production lines, rigs, and platforms.

During the apprenticeship, you will develop expertise in fitting, assembly, installation, and maintenance, with the option to specialise in a particular bias such as mechanical, electrical, electronic, control systems, pipe fitting, or instrumentation. You will learn how to check work against quality standards and make adjustments using your technical knowledge.

Your training will take place both in the workshop and at client premises, giving you real-world experience of engineering fitting. By completion, you will be fully equipped with the practical and technical skills needed to succeed in this highly skilled trade.

How is the course delivered?

The apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of on-the-job learning in your workplace and off-the-job training at college. In the workplace, you will gain practical experience assembling and fitting engineering components, guided by experienced professionals. At college, you will take part in workshops, classroom sessions, and tutorials focused on technical knowledge, safety, and industry standards.

Training is highly practical, with access to specialist workshops and industry-standard equipment. Regular reviews, mentoring, and workplace visits from Trainer Assessors ensure you apply your learning effectively and progress towards meeting the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.

Course Facilities

As an Engineering Fitter apprentice, you will benefit from access to specialist engineering and manufacturing facilities. These include modern workshops, laboratories, and IT suites equipped with industry-standard tools, machinery, and software. Facilities are designed to replicate real engineering environments, allowing you to develop practical skills to a professional standard.

You will also have access to the Learning Resource Centre, providing technical texts, journals, and online databases to support your studies.

Potential Careers

Completing the Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship prepares you for a wide range of roles within engineering and manufacturing. Typical positions include Engineering Fitter, Assembly Technician, Mechanical Fitter, or Maintenance Fitter, with opportunities across aerospace, automotive, maritime, and energy sectors.

With further experience, you could progress into specialist roles such as Instrumentation Fitter or Pipe Fitter, or take on supervisory positions like Team Leader or Workshop Supervisor. Many apprentices continue their development through higher-level apprenticeships or qualifications such as HNC/HND in Engineering, opening pathways into engineering design, project management, or leadership roles.
