Course Overview
This course invites you to explore the exciting world of 3D design, where creativity and technical skill go hand in hand. You’ll work with a broad range of 3D media, processes, and techniques—embracing both classic approaches like ceramics, sculpture, product design, architectural and interior design, as well as exhibition design, environmental design, theatre and film set design, jewellery, and cutting edge 3D digital design. You’re encouraged to experiment across these areas, discovering your strengths and finding your own creative voice.
Throughout your journey, you’ll learn the importance of drawing for design and use sketchbooks or digital journals to plan, refine, and communicate your ideas. Practical learning is at the heart of the course: you’ll model, construct, and assemble artefacts, always focusing on the intended audience, purpose, and setting—urban, rural, or conceptual. You will gain a deep appreciation for form, function, structure, scale, and surface, as well as the safe and skilled use of a variety of tools and equipment.
Your studies will take you through a rich spectrum of historical and contemporary three-dimensional design, connecting your practical projects to different styles, genres, and traditions from both European and global contexts. You’ll explore how design responds to, and shapes, its social, cultural, environmental, and ethical context—giving your work real world relevance and meaning.
Finally, you’ll develop a working vocabulary and use specialist terminology, empowering you to discuss, critique, and present your designs with confidence. This isn’t just about making; it’s about understanding the role of 3D design in the world and equipping you with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to thrive creatively and academically. “
